Green spotted egg on an ankle

Ankle · Mixed · Photo

A small tattoo of an egg with three round green spots sits on the side of the ankle, resembling a spotted egg from a video game. The egg is shaded in soft grey tones to give it volume, with a subtle grey shadow beneath it. The photo is taken close up against white bedding, with the tattoo centred in the frame.

Nobody in Hollow Mead had ever seen a hen lay an egg that colour, so when Maggie Tanner found it wedged between two windfall apples under the old Bramley, she assumed a gull had been up to something. The shell was pale as dishwater, and the three round spots were bright as crushed nettle. She carried it up the orchard in her apron, stepping over wasps drunk on fallen fruit, and set it on the windowsill of the cider house where the evening light came in slantways.

Her grandfather Ted came in with the press key still in his fist and stopped dead. "That's no pullet's work," he said. "Put it back where you found it, love. Things that spot like that don't belong to us."

She didn't. She sat up three nights with a torch and a flask of cold tea, and on the third the egg gave a small knock from inside, then another. By dawn a crack ran like a fishing line round the fattest spot, and out came a creature no bigger than a thimble, green as its own spots, blinking at the press as though it had been expecting a worse welcome.

It ate one windfall, then a second, then looked at her as if she owed it a third. Ted swore it was bad luck. Maggie said it was hungry. By September it was the size of a terrier and followed her down every row, leaving green prints in the dust. The cider house is quiet now. Ted pretends not to notice the second egg on the sill, the one she found in August, already tapping at its shell in the afternoons while the wasps go drunk in the grass.
