Terrier silhouette and clover on an ankle
Ankle · Mixed · Photo
A solid black silhouette of a dog's head in profile, with a pointed ear and a small eye detail, sits on the outer ankle. A small green four-leaf clover floats to the upper left of the dog. The black areas are filled flat with no visible shading, and the clover is a single bright green fill against the pale skin.

Nobody at Carrbridge Junction could remember who had first fed the terrier, only that by the time Mrs Oakley took over the lost property hatch, he already had a bench under the clock and a standing grievance against the 7.12 to Inverness. His name was Tanner, after the signalman who had left him there, and he was black from his ears to the tip of his tail, save for one white flash at the throat that he wore like a man who had been given a waistcoat by mistake.

Every Friday somebody came through with a lost umbrella, a single glove, a canary in a cage once. Tanner sniffed each one and sat down beside it, which was how the office sorted things. Mrs Oakley kept the ledger. Tanner kept the rest.
The morning the clover turned up, it was pressed flat inside a paperback someone had left on bench four, tucked between pages 212 and 213. Four leaves, the green gone soft at the edges. Mrs Oakley meant to throw it away. Tanner put his nose to the book, then to the window, then trotted out onto the platform where the rain had just stopped and the puddles held the sky.
He stood at the very edge of the platform for a long while, ears up, watching the empty track. Then he came back, sat by the hatch and looked at her until she opened the ledger and wrote, in her careful hand, found one clover, to be returned to owner, owner being the dog's choice. She never did learn who had lost it. Tanner did not seem to mind.
