Green tree frog tattoo on a limb

Realism · Other · Colour · Photo

A small tree frog climbs diagonally across the skin, with its limbs splayed and its eyes and toe pads picked out in orange and dark tones. The body is rendered in soft gradients of green and blue-grey, giving it a three-dimensional, shaded look. The tattoo sits near the centre of the frame against a plain, slightly warm skin tone and a dark background.

Mind the step, it's slick where the gulls have been at it. Sit yourself on that bollard, the one that doesn't rock. Now, you'll want to hear about the frog that climbed the Scold's Rope, because nobody in Porthannick believes a word of it, and I was there.

Two summers back, Ada Penrose came down the quay with a crate of bananas from Plymouth and a green thing stuck to the lid. Tree frog, no bigger than a thumbnail, toes spread wide like she was trying to hold the whole harbour in her hands. Nobody wanted it. Frogs don't belong on a quay. Ada put it in a jam jar on the windowsill of the net loft and forgot it.

Three days later the jar was empty and the frog was halfway up the mooring line of the Gannet, climbing hand over hand against the wind, which is no way for a frog to behave. Old Tom Vosper swore it was making for the lighthouse. I told him frogs can't read charts. He said neither could the Gannet's skipper, and he'd sailed her for forty years.

We watched it from the wall. It didn't hurry. It stopped when the rope swung, pressed its feet flat and waited, then climbed on, one leg at a time, as if the sea were nothing but a slope it had decided to take personally. It reached the top of the mast just as the fog came in, and that was the last anyone saw of it. Ada says it went home. Tom says it went to sea. I say a frog that brave deserves better than either, so I've left it there, halfway up the sky, where the fog can't get at it.
