Cartoon sea turtle on a foot
Other · Colour · Photo
A cartoon sea turtle with large round eyes and a smiling face is tattooed on the top of a foot. The shell is dark red-brown with yellow-orange markings, and the head and flippers are shaded in layered greens with darker outlines. The turtle is shown at a slight angle against plain pale skin, with the foot filling most of the frame.

The snow had sealed the Fell Lantern on Tuesday, and by Thursday Mrs Ruddle had counted the mince pies twice and the guests three times, which came to one more than there ought to be.

The extra one lay in the copper bath beside the kitchen range, slowly paddling warm water with flippers the size of dinner plates. He had arrived with the fishmonger from Whitby, who had abandoned his cart and his cod at the bottom of the hill and fled on foot. The turtle had large round eyes, a shell the colour of a cough sweet, and a smile that never once slipped. He seemed perfectly content to be called Mr Pennywhistle, a name Tobias the stable boy had given him after a long conversation neither of them could now recall.
Mrs Ruddle wanted him out by supper. Tobias wanted him kept. Mr Pennywhistle wanted a cup of tea with three sugars and to be told about the sea, which nobody at the inn had seen since the Coronation. So Mrs Ruddle, who had buried a husband and two cats and considered herself beyond sentiment, pulled up an upturned crate and described the tide coming in over the sands at Filey until the kettle boiled dry.
When the thaw came on Sunday, the lane ran brown with meltwater and the fishmonger's cart came grinding back up the hill. Mr Pennywhistle climbed out of the bath, tipped his shell at Tobias, and walked down the drive towards the beck, leaving two wet prints on the flagstones and a single green scale on the windowsill, which Mrs Ruddle kept.
