Cartoon chameleon with bow tie on a calf

Calf · Colour · Photo

A large-eyed cartoon chameleon sits in profile with its curled tail wrapped behind it and a pink bow tie at its neck. The linework is smooth and dark, with soft green shading along the body, yellow-brown irises and small highlights that give the eyes a glossy look. The tattoo fills most of the frame against pale skin, with a blurred checked floor visible at the left edge.

Mind the candles, Aunt Ivy, and sit still, because this is the true tale of the wedding at St Brannock's and the chameleon who carried the rings. Pell was a small green fellow with eyes like two toffee pennies, and he wore a pink bow tie the groom had bought him at Exeter market. His job was simple: walk the aisle on a velvet cushion strapped to his back, tail curled round it like a handle, and under no circumstances change colour in front of the photographer.

Naturally he changed colour. At the lych gate he turned the grey of the wet stones. Halfway up the path he went the tartan of the bridesmaids' sashes, and by the font he was the exact brown of the best man's suit, which is how the best man ended up standing in the wrong place for the vows. The vicar cleared his throat. The organ wheezed. Pell, who had never in his life been so nervous, turned the pale pink of a boiled prawn and sat very still.

Here is the turn, and you must all pay attention. When the vicar asked for the rings, the cushion was empty. The best man had lifted them at the lych gate, thinking the chameleon was a decoration, and was now patting his pockets with a face like a wet Sunday. Pell, meanwhile, had crept down the side of the altar rail and gone the cream-green of the ivy on the vestry wall. Nobody saw him, not until his tongue shot out, quick as a bell rope, and snatched the rings from the best man's top pocket.

He laid them on the rail, one, two, and the bride laughed so hard she had to hold her bouquet to her chest. Her husband swore Pell's eyes went misty gold when he blushed. So if you ever see a little green fellow in a pink tie watching from the cake table, don't offer him a biscuit. He's only resting, and he's counting the rings.
