Green vine tattoo on a thigh
Thigh · Colour · Photo
The photograph is cropped to the torso and legs of a person wearing a paisley shirt, grey shorts, a dark belt, rust knee socks and many rings. A green tattoo of a thin vine with swirling linework sits on the upper thigh on the left side of the frame, partly hidden by the shorts. The background is a plain pale wall, and the soft lighting keeps the focus on the outfit and the tattoo.

The runner beans had gone sideways again by the time the Maud Ellery cleared the Bay of Biscay, and Oskar swore they were trying to climb out through the porthole. I told him they were only following the light, same as the rest of us. He didn't laugh. He was watching the tendril that had looped itself round the brass rail above the range, three careful turns, then a fourth that doubled back on itself like a question.

I had planted the seed in a jam tin in Tilbury, more to keep my hands busy than from any hope of eating. Nobody on a working cargo ship grows anything. But the sill over the sink stayed warm from the stove, the stub came up green in four days, and by the time we were off Finisterre it had found the string I'd tied for it and was swinging its leaves over the potato sacks as if it owned the place.
A cook's job is to notice what's wrong before anyone else does. So when the curls began turning towards the hatch to the forward hold, I noticed. Something had shifted in the night, a crate of tinned peaches come loose, and I went down with a torch and found the stowage damp. The vine had sensed it before I did, or so I told myself, and I cut nothing back that day.
When we docked at Rotterdam the men went ashore for their pay and I stayed behind to scrape the tin clean. Beneath the soil lay one pale root, thick as a finger, that had threaded itself through a crack in the deck plate. I left it there. Some things on a ship are better trusted than mended, and I still hear the leaves tapping the porthole on quiet nights, like someone asking to be let in.
