Godzilla realism tattoo on upper back

Realism · Back · Mixed · Photo

A large realistic tattoo shows the Godzilla monster in profile with its mouth open, its tail curling across the lower half of the design. The scales and dorsal spines are shaded in greys and pale tones with fine detail, set against a dark blue background with lighter blue wisps. The composition fills the upper back, with a small warm red glow at the base of the design.

The pot has boiled dry twice before the bosun stops shouting about the swell, and you are the one who must fish the scorched lentils out with a ladle while the galley lamp swings on its chain. Sixteen days out of Immingham and Dilys, the cook's mate, has stopped singing. She says the sea smells of struck matches. You tell her it's diesel, the way you've told her everything else this voyage.

You go up for air after the midnight watch changes, the fo'c'sle slick and the sky bruised blue over the Bay, lightning working miles off with no sound. Something breaks the water a cable off the port bow, a long back of plates like a row of slate tiles, every spine catching the flash. It doesn't roll. It rises, stands, and lifts a head higher than the wheelhouse roof. Its jaws open with a noise like a ship's horn trapped in a tin bucket, and a dull red glow gathers low in its throat before fading back to grey.

Dilys's hand finds your sleeve. Behind you the wheelhouse door bangs and the captain is shouting for the radio. The thing turns its head, slowly, the way a man turns to check a door he has already locked, and its tail coils once across the swell. The wake hits the hull hard enough to rattle the pans in the galley below. Then it sinks south, following some current only it can feel, and the water closes over it like a lid.

By morning the captain's log reads unidentified swell, no damage. You go back down to the galley and scrape the burnt lentils into the bin, every last one. Dilys hangs the ladle back on its hook without a word. Neither of you looks at the porthole, though through it, far out on the black water, a faint red light keeps pace with the ship for an hour before it dims into the dark.
