Lavender flower with green leaves on an upper arm
Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A large lavender flower with five rounded petals sits at the centre, with a detailed pale blue and yellow dotted centre. Green leaves with yellow vein lines spread out behind it and fill the corners of the design. Bold black outlines define the petals and leaves, with soft shading in the purple and green fills, and the motif is centred on the skin.

By three in the morning the day room on Ward Nine smelt of bleach and of the lavender I had fetched from the car park hedge in a plastic beaker. Mrs Pargeter had asked for it particularly. She said her Frank had grown the same blue in a window box in Swindon, and that she wanted something on the locker that reminded her he had once had hands for growing things. I told her the hedge was council property and she told me to stop being soft and sit down.

So I sat on the plastic chair with my back against the radiator and watched her turn the stem in the light from the nurses' station. The centre of each bloom was a pale ring of dots, yellow at the middle, and she counted them out loud the way other people count sheep. Forty-one, she decided, though I lost track at nineteen. Her hands were steadier than mine. Every so often the monitor by the bed chirped and she waved it quiet without looking up, as if it were a radio she had never liked.
At half past four the petals began to close in on themselves, folding like the lids of tired eyes. I said the flower was tired, and she said no, it was only doing what Frank used to do at the end of a long day, which was to stop pretending to be upright. Then she asked me to take the stem out of the cup and press it flat inside the ward handover book, between Tuesday and Wednesday, where nobody would think to look. When I opened the book at dawn, the dotted centre had printed itself faintly onto the page, a small pale sun in the margin of somebody else's notes.
