Gold arrows on upper chest
Fine line · Chest · Colour · Photo
The image shows a small design of three arrows with feathered fletching and pointed tips, drawn in thin lines near the collarbone. The linework is delicate and the design is rendered in a metallic gold shade with no shading. The photo is cropped at the chin and shoulder, with a bright window and a black strappy top filling the background and foreground.

Mind the step, it's worn where three generations of boots have stood. You want the bow to sit before you touch the string, that's the first thing my father taught me in this shed, and the second thing was never to sharpen a point while you're angry, because it'll remember. He made arrows for the hunting parties up past the reservoir, and when the gold leaf came in from the assayer in Halifax, he used it only on the fletching, a few strands of it, bright as a wet coin. Nobody could say why he did it. Feathers are grey, he said, grey gets lost in the heather.

My sister Ada was the one who wanted the gold on her skin. She came to the shed one wet March with a sketch of three arrows fanned from a single point and asked me to draw them small enough to fit under her collar. I told her no. Then I told her yes, but only with the thinnest hair of a brush, and only in the shade the old man mixed for the shafts. We did it at the kitchen table with a lamp and a bowl of warm water.
What I remember most is that she didn't flinch once, and afterwards she went straight out into the rain to catch the last train to the coast, the gold still wet at her throat. The arrows stayed on the page where I'd pinned the sketch, pointed at the door, as if somebody had told them the way was clear. I keep that sheet in the drawer now. Lift the lid and you'll see the fletching catch the light.
