Small triangle tattoo on the chest

Dotwork · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A small outlined triangle sits at the centre of the chest, with a shaded inverted triangle below it that fades from dense dots at the top to lighter stippling at the tip. The linework is thin and the fill is built from stippled dots, creating a soft gradient. The tattoo is centred in the frame against bare skin, with a knit crop top, pearl necklace and light blue jeans visible around it.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow had come early that year, and Maren still had nineteen goats above the high meadow, so she tied the bell to the lead nanny and did not wait for her brother to finish his bread. The pass was three hours up on a good day. By the time she reached the standing stone, the cloud had dropped so low that the far side of the valley had gone, and only the cut face of the rock showed through the white.

Her grandmother had carved that stone, or so the village said, though nobody could say when. A small peak was chiselled near the top, and beneath it, scratched down the grey face, a darker shadow tapered to a single point at the height of a child's knee. Where the point touched the ground, the old women said, the snow lay thin enough to cross. Where it did not, you turned back and waited for spring.

Maren stood with her palm flat on the cold rock and watched the point. The mist rolled over it, then thinned, and for a moment she could see the bell-rope on her wrist, the goats' breath steaming, and the line of the drift running off to the left. The tip of the shadow sat on a patch of bare ground beside a boulder. She walked to it with the goats strung behind her, placing each hoof as if the stone were counting.

At the bottom, when the herd was safe in the byre and the lamp was lit, her brother asked how she had known the way. She said she had not known, only trusted where the point had been pointing. That night she took a flat grey pebble from the path and walked back up through the dusk, setting it on the bare ground where the shadow ended, so that whoever came after would have something to lean on.
