Grey radial symbol with runic arms

Black and grey · Flash

A symmetrical radial emblem with a central circle and eight arms, each ending in runic-style marks and curled terminals. The linework is thin and uniform, with a subtle metallic grey gradient that gives it a chrome-like finish. It sits centred on a plain black background with no visible body part or shading beyond the design itself.

Dear Tom, the fog came in again on Tuesday and sat on the Skerry for three days like a wet dog. I kept the lamp turning and the bell going, and between watches I did what you always told me to stop doing and looked at the old sign on the lamp room wall. Mother scratched it into the plaster with a hairpin the winter you were born. Eight arms, every one ending in a curl, and the strange marks along them that she said were older than the church. She called it the compass that doesn't need a needle.

Thursday the relief boat didn't come, so I had two days alone with it. I stood under the sign at four in the morning with the lamp sweeping round above me and found I could follow the arms with my eye, out from the centre to each curl, the way you'd trace a route on a chart. Whichever arm you start on, it leads you back to the middle. I think that was her whole lesson, though she never once said it plainly.

The fog lifted on Friday. A coble from Skarra came out through the gap in the reef with a lad at the tiller, and he had a lantern lit in daylight, which nobody does unless they're frightened. I gave him a tin mug of tea and the bearing back to the harbour. He laughed and said his grandad had carved the same sign into the thwart of his boat, so he'd never really been lost at all.

Come out at the equinox if you can. I'll show you the plaster. Tell me whether her lines are still as straight as you remember, because I have started to doubt my own memory of her hand.
