The chart was nearly finished when Ragna noticed the compass rose had been drawn upside down. Eleven months of soundings along the Westfjords had gone into it, and her father's ink was still tacky along a cliff line that she was certain did not exist. She sat under a lamp that smelled of seal oil and tried to decide whether to scrape the sheet or sail it.

The boatmen at Ísafjörður laughed when she showed them. Only old Brandur did not. He turned the paper to the light, laid a thick finger on the starburst at its centre, and said the rose had been drawn by someone who knew that a needle lies when a man is frightened. He told her to bring the chart aboard the Sigrun before the first frost, because the sea that winter would not be read by ordinary eyes.

They sailed on the eleventh of October with rain falling sideways across the bow. Ragna kept the chart flat under a board and watched the little dotted circles, which she had taken for decoration, line up with the swell. Twice the needle swung wild and she heard Brandur mutter the names of the lines like prayers. On the third night the cliff was there, black and sudden in the dark, exactly where the dashes ran north.

They rounded it at dawn with a hundred metres to spare. Brandur folded the chart and handed it back. The rose was still upside down, and she understood at last that her father had never been careless. He had drawn the way home backwards, so that whoever followed it would have to stop, turn the sheet round and look properly.
