The fog rolls over the breakwater before the lamps are lit, and you are the only one on the quay who has not learned to read it. Old Harald Vik has sent you down with a folded sheet of vellum and a stub of charcoal, and told you not to come back until you have copied the sign painted inside the net shed door. You kneel on the wet stones and draw what you see: eight arms radiating from a ringed centre, each one forked at the tip like a gull's foot, each one crossed near its root by short bars, as though someone wanted to stop the wind slipping through.

The boats are out. Your cousin Sigrid is on the Halldis somewhere past the green buoy, and the horn has sounded every few minutes for an hour. The old men keep touching the painted sign with the flats of their hands as they pass the shed, and you ask Harald why. He does not look up from his nets. "It was never a map of the north," he says. "It is a map of the people who are lost. Find the arm that points at them and walk until your feet stop agreeing."
So you stop trying to make sense of it and look at the drawing again. Every arm ends in a hook or a fork, and every hook curls back towards the centre, the way a boat's bow turns when a helmsman is paying attention. You take your charcoal and sketch a single arrow on the wall of the breakwater, the hooked tip angled out towards the mouth of the harbour. Then you stand beside it and cup your hands and shout Sigrid's name into the grey.
The horn answers from closer than before. A dark shape slides out of the fog, low and steady, and Sigrid's voice comes after it, cross and cold and thoroughly alive. You don't tell her about the drawing. You just wipe the charcoal from your fingers on your coat and watch the arrow on the wall, already smudging in the rain, keep pointing home.
