A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rains had not come to the lower valley for three seasons, and the tank behind the old temple wall had gone to cracked mud. Ananda, the gardener's son, carried water up from the well in two clay pots on a yoke, twelve trips before the sun cleared the ridge, and every morning he passed the grey elephant tethered beside the gate. Her name was Sundari. She was older than the wall, the monks said, and she had never once been hungry in her life, because the temple had always fed her.

One morning the monks were gone to the far village for a festival and the gate was left open. Ananda found the elephant with her trunk raised high, swaying, looking not at the sky but at the dry tank. He set down his yoke to see what she wanted. She curled her trunk over the empty basin, and then she drew it back and sprayed, a fine arc of water that she had somehow kept hidden inside her, and it fell in a silver fan across the cracked earth. Where it touched, the mud darkened. Where it dried, it left a pattern like the paisley cloth the merchants sold at market, curling back on itself.

He ran for his pots and filled them from the spray until his shoulders burned. When the monks came home they found the tank full to its lip and a boy asleep against the elephant's foreleg, her trunk folded over him like a blanket. Nobody asked where the water had come from. The old abbot only ran his thumb along the wet swirls on Sundari's grey hide and said that the rains would come now, because she had remembered how it was done.
