Guy Fawkes mask and red roses on chest
Realism · Chest · Mixed · Photo
A man's upper chest and shoulders are covered by a large tattoo of a white Guy Fawkes style mask with a moustache, centred between clusters of red roses. The mask is rendered in soft greys with smooth shading, while the roses have detailed red petals with deep shadows and sit among dark grey leaves and foliage. The composition is symmetrical, with the mask at the centre and the roses framing it across the chest and onto the shoulders.

The barge Patience came up the cut at Tewkesbury with forty crates of roses under tarpaulin, and nobody in the lock-house asked where they had been grown. Mother Ailsa said that was how the river liked it. She had kept the lock for thirty years and knew what people carried past the gates after dark.

Her son Tobias wanted to see the man who paid for the roses. Every fortnight a figure in a pale mask stepped off the towpath, its face smooth as a dinner plate, a black moustache painted on the upper lip. It counted coins onto the gunwale without a word. The mask never blinked and never smiled. Tobias thought it looked like a joke that had forgotten its punchline.
One wet March he hid in the reed bed with a shuttered lantern. The masked man carried the crates up the bank, then knelt at the water's edge and did not remove his mask. He only tipped his head and murmured to the river, and the river lifted a single red bloom from the last crate and laid it on the stones. Tobias crept closer. A leaf of dark grey silk was pinned to the stem, and beneath it, in careful ink, was a name he knew: his mother's.
Ailsa did not scold him at the lock. She poured two cups of tea, set one in front of him, and placed a pale mask on the table beside it, its painted face turned to the wall. "Half the county keeps one in a drawer," she said. "Roses are cheap. Faces are not."
