Roses and lace across a back tattoo
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A large back tattoo shows two shaded roses, one on each side of the upper back, framed by ornate lace patterns and scrolls. Two butterflies sit among the lace, and a heart-shaped motif appears near the centre. The roses are rendered with soft grey shading and highlights, while the lace is drawn in dense black linework, creating strong contrast against the skin.

The roses on the north wall had gone to hips by the time Aunt Edith stopped sending me up the tower with the lace. I was nine that autumn and believed the castle belonged to nobody, which was nearly true. A steward drank in the gatehouse and never asked what I carried under my coat, and the only other company was jackdaws and the damp that crept up the stairs, softening my thread until it sagged.

The lady who ordered the work was called Constance Ashby. She sat in the old solar, where the window had long since fallen out and the sky served as a ceiling, and she never once looked at the cloth. She looked at the carved heart above the hearth, a grey stone thing with a keyhole cut through its middle, and she traced the scrolls around it with one finger while I counted my bobbins and tried not to stare at her hands.
On the last afternoon she told me the lace was a map of a garden door, and that the door had been locked from the inside by her father the year she turned seventeen. Every cuff was to carry one butterfly, she said, one for each winter she had waited on the far side of it. The roses below the tower were what was left of that garden, and she wanted them drawn so thickly no one could see the thorns.
I folded the cuffs in tissue and left them on the sill, as instructed. Constance was gone when I climbed up again at first frost. The keyhole in the stone had been packed with a sprig of rose hip, and beside it, pinned to the mortar with a silver pin, lay a small black butterfly cut from my own spare lace. I kept it. Some doors a girl should not be asked to open.
