Guy Fawkes mask on a calf

Blackwork · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A bold black tattoo of a stylised Guy Fawkes mask, with a raised eyebrow, closed eyes, a curled moustache and a pointed goatee, sits on the calf. The design is built from solid black shapes and tapered lines, with no grey shading. The mask is centred on the leg and fills most of the frame against plain skin and a dark background.

Dear Nan, the mask came up in the net on Tuesday, tangled in a fathom of old rope with a cod that had lost its eyes. Skipper Dunmore wanted it back over the side, but Ruthie had already fished it out and rinsed it in the bucket, and now it hangs on the wheelhouse hook. The paint is cracked along one cheek, but the eyebrow is still up and the eyes are still shut, so it looks like it's got the whole fleet sussed and is letting us know it.

The lads have been daft about it all week. Jamie wanted to wear it on the Thursday run, and Dunmore said no nonsense on the Marigold Ann, not with the quota woman coming out from Carrick Haven with her clipboard and her wellies still creased from the car. So we put it on the hook and turned it to face the bulkhead, and we caught eleven stone of haddock in the cold, which is more than the Gannet caught and she's got a new engine.

The inspector came aboard at six with her clipboard and her tea in a flask. She counted the boxes, checked the mesh and asked who owned the mask. Dunmore said the sea did, and she looked at the hook for a long while and wrote nothing down. Then she climbed back onto the quay without a word.

I'm writing this on the rail with the harbour light coming on across the water. The mask is turned round now, eyes shut, facing the lights of Carrick. I don't know who turned it. Nobody's owning up, and I'm not going to ask.

Love to Mum. Tell her I'm eating.

Tom
