Halloween sleeve with skull character and pumpkins
Realism · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
The sleeve shows a Halloween scene with a skull-faced character, several carved jack-o-lantern pumpkins, a bare tree, a swirling hill and snowflakes. The shading is smooth and grey, with the pumpkins, faces and small details picked out in orange, blue and pink. The design wraps around the upper arm and shoulder, with the main figures placed near the centre of the sleeve.

Dear Tomas,

The snow came over the Sallow Gap two nights before the lanterns, and I have had to dig the well out twice since. Do not climb back up before the thaw, whatever your wife says about the goat cheese. The only guests this week were odd ones. A tall, thin fellow arrived with a coat that hung off him like a sail with no wind in it, and he thanked me for the bread as though I had carved it myself.
Brannoch has set the pumpkins out on the wall by the crossroads shrine, six of them, as he does every year. One grins on the left and frowns on the right, and he swears the frowning side is the honest one. He hung the old elm's lantern from the lowest branch, the one that bends its arms over the road like it is trying to stop the carts. The wax has run down the carved faces in the frost, so they look as if they are weeping sugar.
On the third night a pale-faced gentleman came up the spiral road from the mill hollow, in a black hat like a folded umbrella. He asked for nothing but a striped sweet from my jar, and then he sat by the fire and asked whether the snow ever fell in the right places. I told him no. He seemed delighted with that and left at first light, setting a pink lollipop on the table, bright as a tongue.
I am writing because I have kept it. Every morning the flakes on the windowsill are shaped like small white stars, each one exactly alike, and I have started to think they are a message meant for me. Come home by the lower road when the thaw breaks, and bring the lanterns. Do not bring the cat.
Your loving sister, Ilse
