Sesame Street characters across a calf
Neo-trad · Calf · Colour · Photo
Three side-by-side panels show Count von Count in a purple face with a black cape, Cookie Monster in blue with orange spots, and Oscar the Grouch in a green face peering from a bin under a Sesame Street sign. A brown furry character sits below the Count, and orange numbers float across the piece on swirling red and orange backgrounds. The shading is smooth and painterly, with bright colour dominating the design against a dark background.

Fenwick had been counting the ship's stores since Tilbury, and by the fourth week he could recite the tally in his sleep, which Captain Oakes said was the only useful thing a purser had ever done. Ninety-six tins of peaches. Forty-five sacks of flour. Six barrels of salt pork gone grey at the edges. Each evening he ran his thumb down the ledger with his lips moving, the lamp swinging above the hold like a slow pendulum.

The trouble started with the spare biscuits. Every morning another tin came up short, and the crumbs led forward past the galley to the old slop bin lashed beside the forward hatch. Inside lived Dobbs, a deckhand who had taken a dislike to daylight and a fondness for the bin's dark, sour warmth. He grumbled that the sea was just a dustbin with weather, and he would only put his head out at dawn to shout the wind's name at the gulls. Beside him, blue-faced from flour and sugar, sat the steward Crumb, who swore he had never touched a biscuit in his life.
Fenwick counted the tins twice on the sixth morning, then a third time, and the figure came out six short. He sat on a coil of rope and stared at the bin until the sun rose over the bow and turned the sea the colour of hot brass. Then Dobbs's head appeared over the rim, grinning, a biscuit in each fist. Fenwick opened the ledger, wrote six in the margin, and underlined it twice. Eaten, not lost, he thought, and he let the count stand.
