Mrs Pargeter had kept the sweet shop on Cinder Lane for forty years, and in all that time she had never let a child leave with a sweet she hadn't turned over in her palm first. On the thirty-first of October she sat me on the high stool behind the counter, handed me a jar of humbugs and a pair of spectacles with one cracked lens, and told me a shop was only as honest as the person checking the wrapping.

The first visitors were ordinary enough. A boy in a sack-faced scarecrow mask asked for a quarter of aniseed balls and paid in brass buttons. A girl in a red hood wanted the long lollipops shaped like bullseyes, and she wouldn't say thank you until I'd wiped each stick with a cloth. Mrs Pargeter watched her over the top of the spectacles and said nothing, though she tapped the counter twice, which I had learned meant trouble was on its way.

At nine o'clock the bell rang and a tall man came in wearing a cape that smelled of camphor. He wanted something with a bit of bite. Mrs Pargeter slid a tin across and said the candy corn was the freshest in the parish. He turned one over, then another, and I saw they were not sugar at all but wax painted yellow and orange, each with a tiny skull pressed into the stripe. 'Always check your candy,' she said quietly, and tipped the faded poison bottle from under the counter into the sink. The man's smile thinned. He left without his cape.

When the lane was dark and the last pumpkin had guttered on the step, she counted the buttons into the tin and set the girl's lollipop on the shelf to be thrown away. 'Bolt the door, love,' she said. 'Halloween is the one night the lane knows we're watching.'
