Back of a person's neck showing a small fine line outline tattoo of a hammerhead shark in black ink, with hair tied up in a bun.

Hammerhead shark outline on the neck

Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A small outline of a hammerhead shark, drawn in a single thin black line, sits on the back of the neck. The linework is even and clean, with no shading or fill, so the shape relies entirely on the contour. The photo is taken from behind against a plain skin background with a blue blind and a hand holding up the hair at the top of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

My grandmother kept the tide-ledger in the harbour tower of Calloway Reach, and she never let me touch the ink. The shark on our flag was the only thing in the kingdom drawn in a single line, she said, because the old kings were too mean to pay for shading. I thought that was a joke until the spring the herring failed and the lords sent a man to ask why.

The man was called Ferrin Dask, and he wore a grey coat buttoned to the throat. He wanted the ledger, and he wanted the names of every boat that had sailed past the Teeth in the last ten years. Grandmother gave him the book. She did not give him the names. She turned the pages to the flag and tapped the hammerhead with one knuckle, and said that a creature with its eyes at the ends of its head could see the whole harbour at once, and that she had raised me to look the same way.

Dask laughed until he saw that I was not laughing. Then he looked at the drawing again, at the one unbroken line that ran out along the wide head and back to the tail without ever lifting from the page, and something in his face went quiet. He asked who had drawn it. Grandmother said the first queen of Calloway, who had sailed alone for a year and come back with nothing to show but the outline of the thing that had followed her.

We sent him home on the morning tide with a fresh copy of the flag and no names at all. From the tower window I watched his boat go out past the Teeth, and I saw a fin turn, twice, in the grey water behind it, as if something had been counting.
