Then Kit, the youngest deckhand, a lad from Grimsby with a mouth on him, said the skipper had been running the trawl line through a loop of old rope to keep the twist out, and it worked better than the swivels. Dad snorted, but the next morning he was at the bench with a ball of tarred twine, tying loops that rose into a point like the peak of a little tent. Every few inches he slipped in a cork float no bigger than a thumbnail, and then he left a gap, and then another float. I counted seven before I stopped counting.

He says the floats mark where the lines go down, and that you read a net by its dots more than its meshes. I thought it a daft thing to say until he showed me the chart pinned by the stove, all dotted lines and tiny crosses scattered across the bay. Nothing on it runs straight.

He has tied the last loop himself and is smoothing the tar with his thumb as I write this. He wants it hung above the door, where the wind can get at it. Tell Mum I'm keeping the kettle on, and that the boy from Grimsby is sleeping on our settee, so don't be cross when you hear the snoring.
