Geometric bird tattoos on two shoulders
Geometric · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
Two people are shown from behind, each with a small black outline tattoo of a geometric bird, resembling a folded origami crane, on the upper back near the shoulder blade. The linework is thin and angular, built from straight segments with no shading. The tattoos are in black ink on skin, with a white bra strap and a black top in the foreground and a plastic film dressing visible on the left shoulder.

Dear Ivy,

I have made the crane you asked for, though it came out lopsided because the paper was the back of the Palais programme and the printing kept catching my thumb. Mr Pryce, who runs the cloakroom at the Lyceum Ballroom, says you cannot fold a bird from a thing that has already been used for something else, but I told him that is exactly why it will fly. He laughed and gave me the rest of the programmes for scrap.
Bea, the band played 'Stardust' three times last Saturday, and every time the floor emptied out for the Gay Gordons, Eddie Marsh stood by the pillar with his hands in his pockets pretending he was not counting the steps. I kept my back to him. The folding helps. You cut a square, crease it corner to corner, and then the paper decides what it is going to be, a little at a time, until the wings are sharp enough to cut your finger.
I have set the finished crane on the windowsill of the flat above the fishmonger's. The gulls keep trying to land on it. This morning I took it down and held it up to the light so you could see the lines, straight and sharp, nothing soft anywhere. I thought of you when I saw the creases.
Write soon. Tell me if Mother has stopped asking about the dress.
Love, Nell
