Hamsa hand tattoo on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A hamsa hand outline is built from black dots and fine lines, with a flower-like mandala in the centre filled with blue and cream shading. The palm and fingers carry further dotted and lined detail, with a small blue accent at the top of the design. The arm is raised against a car interior, with the steering wheel and dashboard dials filling the background.

Dear Vi, You will not believe what Mr Okonedo left behind in room four when he went off on the Tuesday boat. Not a penny, not a note, only a hand. It was painted on a flat slate no bigger than a biscuit, the fingers spread, every inch of it dotted like frost on a windowpane. In the middle sat a flower, rings of petals turning inside rings, and the blue in it is the colour of the bay on a still morning, the sort that makes you forget the wind.

I nearly put it in the bin with the tea leaves. Then I remembered what Mother used to say about the blue eye, how it turns aside the envy of a neighbour and keeps the milk from turning. So I hung it above the kitchen door, out of reach of the gulls, and I have been deciding ever since whether it works. The bread has risen. The Hendersons paid their whole fortnight in advance. The rain has held off for the regatta.
Yesterday a letter came for him, forwarded from Leeds, and I opened it, which I am not proud of. It held only a drawing, the same hand copied out in pencil with the petals counted in the margin, and one line underneath: keep the centre open. I have sat with the kettle going cold, wondering whether he meant the flower or the door.
So I have left the latch off tonight, and the slate hangs where the lamp can catch the blue. If he comes back on the Friday boat, he will find his room made up and the hand still watching the step. Your loving sister, Edie.
