Hamsa hand with elephant and leaves sketch
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A pencil drawing of an open hand, with leaf-filled fingers and a stylised elephant walking across the palm. Sprigs of leaves and berry-like shapes sit at the base of the palm and along the thumb and little finger. The fine, sketched outlines are in graphite grey on white paper, with light floral detailing inside the elephant and leaves.

Maud had drawn the hand four times before Teodor let her stop. Each sketch the fingers grew longer, leaves sprouting from the nails as if the palm were a hothouse, and each time he tapped the paper with his pencil and said the elephant was wrong. "She walks like she's apologising," he said. "Give her somewhere to go."

The Pennywhistle Travelling Show had been losing its tent by inches all autumn. Half the ring lights were dead, the calliope wheezed on only two notes, and the ticket boy had taken to selling raffle tickets for the caravan roof. Mabel, the old cow elephant, still knew the march by heart. She could carry the roustabouts' flag around the sawdust without anyone telling her, and she never once looked back at the empty benches.
On the last night in Hull the rain came sideways through the canvas. Maud sat on an upturned crate by the tack wagon with the drawing on her knee and the damp soaking into the paper. Mabel swung her head over the rope and breathed warm across the page, and the graphite smudged under her trunk into a grey cloud.
Maud laughed, then didn't. She took the pencil and drew the leaves climbing up the elephant's legs, one for each town they had played that year, and when Teodor found her at dawn the palm was full of green shoots and the elephant was walking off the edge of the paper, towards a field nobody had yet named.
