Hamsa hand with eye on forearm

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A hamsa hand outline filled with intricate mandala-style patterns, with an eye set within a teardrop shape at its centre. The linework is fine and dotted in places, with soft grey shading that gives the eye depth and dimension. The tattoo is shown in black and grey against a dark background, with the forearm filling most of the frame.

Dear Ilse,

The Vizier's wife came to the bobbin house again this morning with her hand wrapped in silk, asking for the pattern we had made for her husband's ledger cover. She wants the hand of Mirrath, the old protecting hand, worked in thread so fine it could be mistaken for frost on a window. I told her what I always tell them: the lace will hold only if the eye is set in the very middle, where the threads cross and cannot slip.

Mother never let me work the eye. She said a girl who stitched watchfulness into cloth would spend her life looking over her shoulder. So I did the fingers and the scalloped border instead, one hundred and twelve picots to each finger, counted under the lamp until my eyes ran. Last night Father carried the finished panel to the harbour office and it was hung above the tax tables, where the clerks swear nobody has been cheated since. That is the sort of thing clerks say.

Today the wife returned with the hand unpicked. Someone had cut through the centre, she said, and the eye had dropped into her lap. She looked frightened and oddly relieved. I found a loose thread caught in her palm and saw at once that it had been pulled, not broken, by someone who knew exactly where the knot was.

I have kept the thread. I will bring it at midsummer, so you can tell me whether I have been a fool to stitch what I was never permitted to watch.

Your sister, Nell
