Hamsa hand with eye on a thigh

Blackwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A large hamsa hand fills the frame, with an open eye at the top and a lotus motif at the base. Fine dotwork shading and bold black outlines build the mandala-style pattern, with fine lattice and feather details in the centre. The tattoo is black and grey, with pale skin showing through the highlights and a plain white backdrop behind the limb.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Nell, I am writing this on the back of a carbon receipt at a roadhouse on the road south of the pass, where the wind has been trying to take the page since dawn. The man who keeps the place, Hadi, has a hand painted above his door: an open palm with a blue eye sitting in its middle like a coin in a bowl. He told me his grandfather painted it the year the well dried up, so the eye would keep watch over what little water was left.

I asked whether the eye was meant to frighten things off. He laughed and said it does not frighten anything, it only notices. Then he pointed to the flower at the base of the palm, which his wife calls the one that opens out of mud, and to the feathers running down the fingers, for the birds that carried messages across the dunes before the phone masts came. I tried to copy the diamond lattice in the centre of the palm, the pattern like a net for catching something small, and gave up after forty minutes with my pencil worn to a stub.

Tomorrow I take the lorry to Zagora with a crate of dates and a sealed letter from Hadi to his cousin, who he says will not believe a word of it unless it arrives in his own handwriting. His wife counted the crate twice this morning and wrote the number on the lid in chalk, then wrote it again underneath, smaller, as if the first might be lying.

I will post this from the next town if there is a box that works. The stamp is already dusty from my thumb, so forgive the grey mark over the queen. Tell Mum the palm is still open and the eye is still looking, and that I have, for once, been the one watched.
