Eye in a geometric mandala on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A large open eye sits at the centre of a star-shaped mandala with a bold black outer border. The eye and the surrounding petal-like points are shaded in grey with fine linework, while the inner panels are filled with stippled dots. The ink is almost entirely black and grey, with a few faint reddish dots, and the design fills the frame against plain skin.

The stairwell window on the eleventh landing of Halvard House had been an eye since 1968, when the council hired a man from the art school to make the place feel less like a filing cabinet. Star-shaped panes ran out from a single open lid of glass, and at the centre the iris had faded to the colour of dishwater. Ruth Pell, the night caretaker, had walked past it thousands of times without stopping.

Then the lift failed for the third time that month, and she climbed the stairs with a torch and a tin of enamel she had bought for the bin store. Her knees complained at the sixth landing. On the eleventh she set the tin on the sill, found a brush in her coat pocket, and started on the pupil, dotting the black in a slow ring the way her father had taught her to mend crockery.
When she finished it was past three. Below, the car park lamps buzzed. A van pulled in and did not move. Ruth stood in the stairwell with paint on her cuff and felt, for once, looked at rather than simply looked after. Through the glass she could see the flats opposite, every window dark except one on the ninth floor, where someone else was also awake.
By morning the van had gone and a note was taped to the lift door in careful capitals: THANK YOU FOR SEEING US. Ruth read it twice, then climbed to the eleventh landing and stood beneath the eye, which was sharper now, and let it watch her all the way back down.
