Sit down by the well and I'll tell you about the knife that never cut bread. Out past the salt flats, where the road forgets its own name, there was a woman called Orla Venn who mended saddles and sewed up the men who came off the wagons. She kept her needles rolled in oiled leather and a dagger in her belt, and everyone said the dagger was for show, because a woman who sews for a living has no need of a blade.

Then the Ferris brothers came through in March carrying a debt their father had left them, and the eldest slapped his palm down on her table and said it would be settled in blood or in stitches, whichever she preferred. Orla did not reach for the dagger. She reached for the thread. She closed his cut hand with the blackest silk she owned, one stitch for every name he had spoken that night, and told him the wound would heal crooked unless he kept his fist open for a month.
He came back in April with the fist open and asked her to sew the blade itself into the lining of his coat, so that every time he reached for a weapon he would feel something softer than steel. That was the turn of it. Orla never said yes or no. She laid the dagger on the table between them, handle towards him, and waited.
Which is why, if you look at the old sign above the stables, you will see a hand holding a blade with its point to the sky, and a bundle of needles tied beneath it. It is not a warning. It is a price, and the sum is always paid in thread.
