Fine line drawing of two hands pressed together
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
The drawing shows two open hands pressed palm to palm, with fingers angled upwards and wrists fading out at the bottom of the frame. It is rendered in thin, even black outlines with no shading, and the nails are filled solid black. The design is centred on a plain off-white background with generous empty space around it.

Dear Ruth,

The varnish came off the lamp room railing again this morning, so I'm writing with my left hand while the right one still smells of acetone. You'd laugh to see me on the step with a tin of black lacquer and a cotton bud, trying to keep the colour inside the lines the way you always did for Mother on Sundays.
The relief was switched over at four and the gulls have been on the glass since. I watched the Ardnish boat come round the point, the one with the blue wheelhouse, and I thought of the night you pressed your palms flat against the carriage window at Oban, both of us too old for such nonsense, the guard shouting at us to sit down. Hands together, that was our way of saying I'll see you soon before we had the words for it.
Here is what I want to tell you. Tom from the supply boat says the new keeper's girl is taking the Fenwick cottage in spring. He asked after you by name, which I did not expect, and I told him you were nobody's business but your own. I hope you'll forgive my tone.
Come up at Easter if the weather lets you. I'll leave the lamp unlit on the Thursday, and you can climb the stairs and put your hands on the cold gallery rail beside mine, and we'll look out at nothing in particular for an hour, the way we used to.
Your loving brother, Alec
