Traditional flower with orange outlines
Traditional · Other · Mixed · Photo
A large flower sits at the centre of the image, with grey and white petals outlined in bold orange and dotted detail. Green leaves and red tips spread around it. The bold black linework and flat shading are typical of traditional tattooing.

Mabel had done the design above her chandler's shop on Fish Quay, a fat grey bloom with petals like pressed linen, each edged in orange so bold it looked lit from inside. She dotted the centres with red, set a ring of dark green leaves around the base, and told Harrow the colours were for seeing in fog. 'Orange carries,' she said. 'Grey doesn't. Mind that.'
We were out three weeks on the Dogger. The weather came in from the north-west on the twelfth day, the kind that turns the sea to pewter and takes the horizon with it. I stood the wheel with my hands numb in wet wool and watched the door-flower swim up out of the murk, orange edges first, while everything else dissolved behind us. Harrow saw it too. He didn't speak, only tapped the glass twice with one knuckle.
We came home past the breakwater on a Thursday with two hundred boxes of plaice and the paint still bright. Mabel was waiting on the quay with her arms folded. She looked at the door, then at me, and nodded as though she had steered us in herself.
