Hand inking an ornate black linework design
Black and grey · Flash
A hand holds a black marker and draws a dense, detailed design of figures, scrolls and swirling foliage on a curved white surface. The work uses bold black outlines with fine interior hatching and decorative filler patterns across the whole composition. The image is in black ink on white, with the drawing filling most of the frame and the hand visible at the right edge.

Old Hamid was sent for when the potter's daughter in the next village would not stop weeping, because her bridal bowl had not yet been marked and the family said a bare bowl would crack on the wedding night. He walked the sand road for three days with a pen case, a flask of water, and a jar of black ink made from lamp soot and gum.

He reached the house at dusk. The bowl was white and curved like a new moon, and the girl sat with it on her knees, refusing to look at it. Hamid turned it slowly in his hands and began. First he drew the lines that hold everything together: a woman with a fan of feathers, a bird with its neck folded back, a vine that grew out of the woman's hair and wound round the rim. Then came the small work, the hatching and the dots, the leaves that curled like the ends of a question.
He worked through the night. The girl, despite herself, leaned closer each hour to watch the lamp find each figure. By the time the last dot was placed, the vine had travelled all the way round the bowl and met its own beginning, which is how you know a thing is finished.
In the morning the girl carried the bowl to the well and filled it to the brim. The water did not seep through the lines, and not one drop escaped. Hamid was already back on the road, his pen case heavier by a single coin, the sun rising over the dunes like a clean page.
