Shaded feather design drawn on tracing paper
Black and grey · Flash
A hand uses a black fineliner to outline a long, feather-like design on a strip of translucent tracing paper. The design is built from layered, pointed shapes that narrow towards the bottom right, and the upper section is shaded in grey pencil. The warm wooden surface and plain paper keep the focus on the drawing.

The tracing paper had gone soft at one corner from being handled, and Marta kept smoothing it flat with the side of her thumb while the ink dried. Her grandmother had drawn feathers this way for forty years, one pointed shape stacked on the last, always starting at the quill and working outward, never the other direction. The lower barbs were the hardest. You had to let them thin out to nothing, or the whole thing looked like a fish bone.

The man from the ferry office had asked for something that would survive weather. He wanted the grey shading to look like rain had got into the ink, not like a pencil had been dragged across it. Marta had told him that was the trick of it: the shading was only ever meant to suggest light sliding off something. Nobody needed to see the pencil.
On Thursday the wind came up off the estuary and rattled the shutters of the shop all afternoon. Marta laid the drawing on the counter under the lamp and went over the last barb twice more, slowly, until the point was so fine it could have pricked a finger. Then she held the sheet up to the window. Through the paper she could see the grain of the wooden counter beneath it, faint as a watermark, and the feather lay across it like something that had blown in from the sea and decided to stay.
