A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

My father drew the sea before he ever sailed on it. Every evening at Porthkerris he sat on the harbour wall with a board across his knees and a blue pencil, copying the curl of each wave as it broke against the stone. He said a wave was only a spiral that had forgotten where it started, and that if you drew it slowly enough, the water would have to behave.

The summer the gale took the Mary Ann, I found his boards in the net loft. Forty years of waves, hatched in lines so fine they shimmered when I held them to the lamp. Some sheets had triangles along the margins, sharp as the teeth of a saw, and in the corners he had written the times of high water, as if the tide were a debt he meant to settle.

I took the boards to the wall the next evening. The tide was making, slow and white at the foot of the steps, and I tried to match his curls with my own pencil. Mine came out lopsided. A woman walking a dog stopped to ask if I was mapping the harbour for the council, and I said no, I was learning how my father breathed when he was thinking.

When the water reached the third step I finally got one right, a spiral that wound inward and then unwound just past where I expected it to stop. I folded the board and left it on the wall in the blue light. In the morning the board was gone, and on the stone where it had lain, the spray had dried into a single curl, pale as chalk, waiting for me to finish it.
