The Majestic Ballroom in Morecambe was emptying in ragged clumps, coats going on, the band packing away its trumpet case with a sigh you could hear from the doors.

Frankie pressed the paper flat on the sprung floor with the heel of her hand. She had written the oath in her neat school hand, then gone over it in ink from her dad's fountain pen so it wouldn't smudge. Solemnly swear I am up to no good. Underneath, two small inked footprints, one pair, heading for the fire door.

'Flour,' Dot said. She had a paper bag from the tea urn, and she was already shaking it out in a fine white line across the boards, toes pointing towards the stage, heels in the dark. Each print took them a second, and each second the caretaker's keys jangled somewhere nearer the cloakroom.

They reached the fire escape with the floor a pale trail behind them. Frankie licked her thumb, pressed it to the iron rail, and grinned. In the morning, Mr Hollis would find a path of footprints rising from the dance floor to the roof, and he would never be able to say who had walked them.
