Two outline hands on an inner upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
The photo shows two small hands drawn in thin black outline, one pointing upward and one angled with fingers spread, placed side by side on the inner upper arm. The linework is fine and even with no shading, and the ink is black on pale skin. The plain light background and dark clothing keep the focus on the tattoo.

The hooter goes at ten past two and you are already at the lamp room window with your sleeves rolled and the brass tokens cold in your fist. Nobody has said the cage is stuck. Nobody needs to. The women gather along the wash-house wall the way they always do, and Mrs Pryce from the end terrace hands you a flask without looking at you, which is how you know it is bad.

Up at the head gear the wheel stands still. You have watched it turn ten thousand times and never once thought about how loud it is when it stops. Your father taught you the signs before you could read: one finger up for all well, flat palm for wait, and the hand held open with the fingers spread, which means I am coming to you. He used to make that shape across the chapel pews during sermons when he was bored and you were meant to be listening.
Near four o'clock the rope begins to sing and the cage comes up grey with dust. Tomos Hughes steps out first, then two more, then the last man, who is not your father, and who looks at you with his cap in both hands. Your father is still below, holding the lamp steady for a boy who cannot find his feet. You lift your own hand to the window, one finger pointing at the ground, then at the wheel, then at the sky. Stay. Coming. Soon. You keep it raised long after the arm aches, until the second cage rattles up out of the dark and his palm opens against the light.
