Black fine line script lettering of a handwritten quote tattooed on skin, reading about the past hurting and learning from it.

Handwritten quote in black script

Lettering · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo is a handwritten quote in flowing black script, reading 'Oh yes, the past can hurt. But the way I see it, you can either run or learn from it.' The linework is fine and even, with the letters slanting consistently across several lines. The ink is solid black on pale skin, and the text fills most of the frame.

The boy wanted the old drift sealed with brick, and he said so at the pithead while the cage was still ticking down with the morning shift. Nobody at Hollin Pit argued with Ada Breck's grandson in those days. He had her temper and her long memory, and everybody knew the drift had taken Walter Pell's two sons in the wet winter.

Ada did not stop him. She took him to the bench outside the lamp room and told him what the old men had told her, the way you would describe weather. The roof had come down because the props were rotten, and the props were rotten because a man named Sam Yeo had said so once and then gone quiet, not wanting to be the one who ran. 'Hurt is hurt,' she said, 'and you'll feel it each time you walk past that hole. But you can turn your back on it or you can learn what it's telling you. Turning your back only leaves the hole for the next lad.'

The boy went down with a tin of chalk and a notebook. He tapped every prop in the drift, put a white cross on each one that rang hollow, and wrote the number beside it in his round careful hand. Three weeks later he had forty-one timbers on his list, and the foreman, who had laughed at him in the yard, sent a crew to replace every one.

When the drift was opened again, Ada rode down in the cage and found his crosses still on the wall, each one dated. She ran her thumb over the newest. Then she climbed out into the grey light and left the boy below to keep watch over the new timber, lamp held high, as if he had always belonged there.
