Handwritten quote on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A multi-line handwritten quote in black ink runs down the inside of a forearm, set against a white shirt and blue jeans. The lettering is thin, slightly uneven and in a casual script, with the lines stacked closely together. The palette is black ink on skin, with a green hedge in the soft-focus background.

Taped inside the door of the proving cupboard was a page torn from a school exercise book, the handwriting slanting like rain. She had found it the week her father's shop was sold, and she had not thrown it away. She suspected the note was his, written the winter before she was born, and that he had left it for a child who would one day stand in the dark deciding whether to keep going.
She lit the second oven, slid in the first tray of tins, and pressed her palm flat against the cold steel. By storm, she thought, and laughed at herself, and then did not laugh. The loaves came out at six, dark and split along their seams, exactly as they should.
