Handwritten word tattoo on the wrist
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows the word Dad written in loose black script, with a single curved stroke under the letters that crosses over one side. The linework is thin and even, and the ink is solid black with no shading or colour. The tattoo is centred on the inside of a pale wrist, photographed close up against a dark textured background.

Mo had chalked the prices on the slate every morning for eleven years, and every morning the rain on Hartley Street market smeared them before the first customer arrived. This Tuesday the low end of the pitch had flooded, and leeks floated in the gutter like driftwood while the stallholders swore at the sky.

Her daughter Ewa came splashing down the row with a carrier bag tied over her hood. She was nine and furious about the weather. 'Dad's still at the fish stall and he won't come out,' she said, and pressed a soggy envelope into Mo's hand. On the back, in biro, someone had written a single word in loose letters that leaned into each other as if they were tired. Dad. A stroke ran beneath it, sweeping up at one end like a line drawn to stop the page blowing away. Mo knew the hand before she knew the word, because Ewa had written it that way since she was five.
Mo read it twice, then looked down the market to where Tomasz was hauling ice off a trestle with his back to the weather. She tucked the envelope inside her coat, against her ribs, where it could not get wet. Then she picked up the chalk.
The leeks were a pound a bunch. She wrote the price small and neat on the slate, and then, underneath, in a hand she hoped was looser than her own, she copied the word and drew a line beneath it that ran off the edge of the board. The rain came down and softened the chalk, but that line held a while longer than the prices did.
