Happiness script on a finger
Fine line · Hand · Colour · Photo
A close photograph of a hand with the word happiness written in thin, cursive script across the middle finger. The linework is fine and even, in a single purplish ink, with the letters sitting along the length of the finger. The plain white textured background keeps the focus on the tattoo.

He tried the Latin first and found it too stiff for the page. The English word was longer than he liked, with its open loops and the tail of the final letters running on. He cut a fresh quill, thinned the iron gall with a drop of rainwater, and wrote it low along the foot of the leaf, letting the line trail from the edge of the vellum towards the spine, thin and even, like a ribbon pulled taut across a finger.
Brother Osric came in from the cellar with his sleeves rolled and his breath clouding the air. He squinted at the page, sounded the word out slowly, and asked whether it meant the thing a man feels when the bread is warm and the fire is lit. Edwin said he supposed it did, though he had never once written it. Osric laughed and said that was the trouble with the English, they put their gladness on the outside of a word where nobody could miss it.
When the leaf was dry, the abbot found a small smudge at the final letter, the print of a thumb pressed there by accident. He wanted it scraped. Edwin asked him to leave it, and the abbot, who had never been known to yield, shrugged and let it stand.
