Carpe diem script tattoo on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A bare foot rests on white bedding, with a small black script tattoo reading carpe diem across the ankle and side of the foot. The lettering is thin, single-line linework with minimal shading, giving a delicate, handwritten appearance. The photograph is a soft, bright overhead shot with the foot in the centre and dark denim trousers at the left and bottom edges.

Sit down, you're blocking the bench and the 4.12 is late enough already. My father ran the signal box at Hollin Cross before they cut the line back, and in the summer of 1958 a young woman came off the milk train with one shoe on and a suitcase that wouldn't shut. Her name was Maud Ferrier. She had a pencil behind one ear and nowhere she had to be until Tuesday.

She sat in the box all afternoon, watching him pull levers. She asked what the old Latin on the mileage board meant, and he told her it meant seize the day. She laughed so hard the kettle boiled over, and said it was the most Yorkshire thing she'd ever heard, a man telling her to be quick while standing perfectly still with a flask of tea.
The 4.12 never came that day. The track flooded at the culvert, so they sat out the evening on the platform, and she wrote something on the back of her ticket in small, careful letters. Then she tucked it into the frame of the signal box window with a drawing pin. Dad said she used pencil so it would rub out if she changed her mind.
Her train left on the Tuesday. The ticket stayed pinned in that window for thirty-one years, going brown at the corners, until the day they pulled the box down and he carried it home in his coat pocket. It said only the two words, in her small looping hand. He never found out whether she took her own advice, but he kept it, and now I've told you, so you've to keep it too. Mind the gap.
