Harry Potter themed tattoo collage
Neo-trad · Other · Mixed · Photo
The collage shows four separate tattoos. A bold, outlined owl with a Hogwarts crest is shown in colour, a black and grey panel depicts a seated figure beside an open book with a printed quote, a soft watercolour stag has blue and pink washes, and a shaded cartoon figure with round glasses holds a wand. Each panel is a close crop of skin with even lighting and a simple background.

You take over the owl stall on the Ashby fair the week the old keeper's hands give out. The owl sits on a perch above the tin cups, a great barn bird with eyes like brass lamps, and she watches every coin you drop with the look of a bookkeeper. Nobody tells you her name, so you call her Mrs Pell, because she tuts.

Evenings, when the lights come on over the dodgems, you read the book the keeper left in the caravan, its spine taped twice. Half of it is about a stag that crossed a frozen lake the night the fair last pulled up stakes. The other half is pencilled notes from someone who signed off with a single initial. Under one note, in a looping hand, it says it does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live. You close the book, and the owl taps the perch with her beak.
On Wednesday a boy with round spectacles, one arm mended with sticky tape, comes to the rail with a wooden wand tucked into his coat like a pencil. He wants the glass globe on the top shelf. You tell him the shot is harder than it looks. He tells you that's what the man on the poster said, and you laugh. Mrs Pell hoots once, which she has never done for paying customers.
At closing you count the takings and leave the rail open. In the morning the perch is empty and the caravan door hangs ajar. A single grey feather lies on the open book, beside a pencilled line that says only: go on.
