Haunted mansion ghosts on upper back
Back · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows a pink gothic mansion with pointed towers behind a row of turquoise ghostly figures: a top-hatted ghost on the left, a skeleton holding a round object in the centre, and a shaggy ghost with a chain on the right. Bare trees and a dark green and yellow glowing backdrop frame the scene. Black outlines and shading define the figures and house, with flat turquoise, pink and yellow-green fills.

Dolores Pike had worked the night shift at Hallow Manor for eleven years, long enough to know which of the ghosts liked to be polished and which needed their chains oiled. The pink house on Pellow's Pier had been painted the colour of boiled sweets in 1962, and nobody had touched the paint since except the gulls.

On the last Thursday in October the ghosts started misbehaving. The top-hatted gentleman in the first carriage kept tipping his hat to the wrong passengers. The skeleton in the parlour, who was meant to hold his crystal ball up and grin, had begun holding it out to Dolores instead, as though offering to read her fortune. She cut the mains at half past eleven, sat on an upturned crate by the loading bay and waited for the tide to come in under the boards.
They came out past the painted trees at midnight, turquoise and faintly damp, dragging their chain behind them like a dog that had slipped its lead. The shaggy one spoke first. It said the sea had been very rude to them since the council sold the pier, and they had nowhere left to haunt except her.
"You've a fortnight before the new owners arrive," she said. "Go on, then. Frighten somebody proper."
The skeleton shrugged and lifted the crystal ball. For a moment Dolores saw in it the stretch of coast the ride had always faced, the lighthouse, the wrecked trawler, and a house with every lamp lit all the way down to the water. Then the ghosts filed back into the trees and left her the chain, which was still warm.
