Heart and flowers with No Scrubs banner on thigh

Traditional · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A traditional-style heart sits at the centre of the design, filled with red and purple shading and edged with a scalloped teal border and small yellow studs. Two pink flowers with blue centres and green leaves sit on the heart, with a ribbon banner across the lower half reading NO SCRUBS. Bold black outlines and smooth colour fills dominate the composition, which is photographed close up on the upper thigh.

The dance at the Majestic has been going since seven, and by half past nine you have turned down four boys with Brylcreem hair and one who wanted to know whether your mother was the Mrs Gould who ran the chip shop. Dot keeps a tally on the back of her hand in lipstick pencil. You tell her it's a waste of good lipstick. She tells you that's the third time you've said so this month.

Walter Frane is number five, though he doesn't ask to walk you home. He asks whether he may stand near the lemonade urn for a while, because his cousin bet him a shilling he wouldn't manage a whole song without saying something foolish. You laugh so hard you have to sit down on the radiator. He stands there through the whole of 'Unchained Melody' with his hands in his pockets, saying nothing, and it turns out that silence is a kind of cheek you had never met before.

When the band packs up, his cousin is waiting by the doors with his collar up and a grin that drops the moment he sees Walter's face. Walter isn't angry. He just holds out his hand and says goodnight to you, then to Dot, then to the cousin, in that order, and walks off into the drizzle without looking back.

On Monday you take a length of red satin from the haberdashery on Cross Street and sew two words along it in white thread, with a small stitched heart at each end. You pin it across the front of your coat, and the whole length of the factory floor reads it before you reach your machine.
