No rules banner and flowers on a forearm

Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A red five-petalled flower with a yellow centre sits at the middle of the design, framed by two yellow flowers, green leaves and two ribbon banners reading NO RULES. The outlines are bold and black, with flat solid fills and a little shading on the banners in teal and grey. The palette is bright and saturated, with red, yellow, teal and green on pale skin, and the design is centred on the forearm against a dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dot Pennington had a brush between her teeth and a ladder under her feet when the man from the council cleared his throat at the bottom of it. He wanted to know whether the lettering over Sayer's Bakery had been approved, and whether the red flower she was painting in the corner was strictly a bakery matter. She took the brush out and told him flowers were not regulated in Margate, not yet.

He wrote something down. She could see the clipboard tilt. Behind him the tide was coming in grey over the harbour wall, and the gulls were already fighting over a split bag of crusts outside the shop next door.

The ribbon banners went up at ten. Mr Sayer had asked for something cheerful, and Dot had sketched him two scrolls with NO RULES across them. He looked at the sketch for a long time before laughing so hard he had to sit on the step. "Edith would have liked that," he said, and then he looked embarrassed, because she had been dead eleven years and the bakery had been the only thing he talked about since.

The inspector came back at four with a stamped form in one hand and a paper bag in the other. He had bought a bun. He stood a while under the sign, following the teal shading with his eyes, and said the lettering was perfectly legal. Dot climbed down, wiped her hands on her overalls, and gave him the last of the yellow daisies she had kept back for the corners.
