The cross is still standing by the culvert at the thirty-mile mark, though the wind has stripped the paint from its crossbar and the jam jar Mrs Abernathy left at its foot has gone to rust. I walked out on Sunday with the thermos and sat in the shade of the water tank the council never bothered to remove. You said once that nobody out here stops for anything they didn't come to see, so I suppose that is what I did.

Someone has been replacing the flowers. Not Mrs Abernathy, she's in the home in Kettering now, and not the council. Fresh stems, always two, tied with brown leather thong of the sort you'd use to mend a saddle. I tried to catch whoever it was, but I only ever find the dust they leave and tyre marks turning back east before the light comes up.

I'm telling you this because the survey crew wants to shift the cross for the new bypass. Clean line, they say, with a concrete marker in its place. I said the cross isn't an obstacle, it's a waypoint, and the lad with the clipboard laughed until I showed him the 1961 chart where it's inked in as the only fixed point for forty miles. He went quiet after that.

So I've told them I'll keep watch until the flowers stop coming. Come home when the road reopens. I'll bring the thermos, and you can tell me who you think is tying those stems.
