Fine line black tattoo of an outlined heart joined to a heartbeat line and the word love in script, placed on the upper chest near the collarbone.

Heart and heartbeat love script on chest

Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A thin black outlined heart flows into a single continuous line that rises and falls like a heartbeat trace, ending in the handwritten word love. The linework is delicate and even, with no shading, and the ink is solid black against light skin. The close crop shows the upper chest and collarbone area, with a grey top and a hand with red-painted nails at the left edge.

Dear Ruth,

The tide gauge at the harbour wall has gone quiet again, so I've taken the pen out to the greenhouse where the light holds longer. You'll laugh, but I've been copying its paper strips onto the back of seed packets all week, before the damp curls them. Mr Pell says the ink drum needs replacing and that it is not my job to fix it, which is a relief, since I have never understood how the float works.

Yesterday the strip came off with a line that climbed and dropped in a way I hadn't seen before: a tall peak, a small hitch, then another peak. I sat with it in my lap while the runner beans went on climbing the twine without me. Mr Pell called it a surge from the south-westerly. I didn't think it was nothing. It seemed to be keeping time with something, the way you used to tap the table while you waited for the kettle.

Enclosed is the best copy I managed. I drew a heart at the start of the line, round and loose, because the sea knows nothing about hearts and I wanted one thing on the page that did. Then I let the trace run on from it and wrote the word love beneath, as neatly as I could. It came out sloped and a little fast, the way you write when you are glad about something.

Come down at the weekend. Bring the good scissors and I'll show you the strip, and the beans, which have finally decided to behave.

Love, Ada
