Small outline heart on the side of the chest

Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A small heart drawn as a single thin black outline sits on the side of the chest, near the breast. The linework is even and the heart is unshaded, with no added colour. The shot is a close side view with a white top pulled down and a hand with rings holding the fabric, and the background is softly blurred green.

Snow had shut the pass for nine days when the carter came down the mountain with a sack on his back and no name he would give. Old Hanne, who kept the inn at the bend of the road, put him in the back room beside the bread oven, because it was the warmest and because nobody else was coming up that road to need it.

Each night the carter sat by the oven with a stick of burnt willow and drew a heart on the whitewash beside his bed. It was only the edge of a heart, a single unbroken line that closed on itself, with nothing inside it. In the morning the maid scrubbed the wall with lye and the plaster came up clean. The next night he drew it again, the same size, the same even stroke, and again the morning took it.

On the ninth night Hanne stood in the doorway with a lamp and asked him what he was doing. He said the heart was for a woman who had walked the other way over the pass in autumn, and that he did not know how to fill it. Hanne looked at the outline a long time, then took the stick from him and said the edge was the part you could draw without knowing anything. The inside was for whoever came back to stand in it.

The thaw came on the tenth morning, loud and dripping. When the carter went out to the road, the snow was printed with a single set of boots coming down from the high side, stopping at the inn door, and then turning back up towards the pass. On the whitewash, under the lamp smoke, the heart was still there, and Hanne had not scrubbed it.
