Fine line bow tattoo on wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A thin, red outlined bow with two loose loops and trailing ends is drawn around the wrist, appearing to sit like a ribbon band. The linework is delicate and even, with no shading, and the ink is a single muted red. The photo is cropped to the wrist, hand and shoulder, with a grey top and a white strap in the background.

Tuesday, and the rain has got into the reel of red petersham again. Mr Okonedo from the post office came in wanting a yard of it for his daughter's hair, then stood at the counter turning the spool over and over as though he might buy the whole thing if he kept at it. I cut him three yards and did not charge for the fourth.

Mother says a ribbon is only ever a promise that you will come back to untie it. I told her that was sentimental rubbish, and she laughed so hard she had to sit down on the stool by the button tins. She has been in bed since Easter. Every morning I tie a bow on her wrist so the nurses know which hand is hers, the loops even, the tails trimmed on the slant the way she taught me.
This afternoon the bell over the door rang and it was only the wind, but I went to the window anyway. Down on the front the lifeboat men were coiling rope, and one of them lifted his cap towards the shop as if we had some business together. I wrote his name in the ledger under the day's takings, which is not what the ledger is for.
Tomorrow I'll take her the whole reel and let her choose the colour. She will pick the dullest red, the one that looks like old brick, and say it is for practical reasons. I will leave the scissors on the sill where she can reach them.
