Heart and peace sign in red, yellow and green
Other · Colour · Photo
A heart and a peace sign overlap in a single outlined tattoo on smooth skin. The black outlines are bold and even, and each shape is filled in bands of red, yellow and green. The tattoo sits centrally in the frame against a plain background, with a green and white waistband visible along the bottom edge.

Four in the morning and the ovens have been lit since two. You crack the shutter halfway, let the cold in under it, and Dolores Brand from the flat above pushes a tray of rolls through the gap without a word, the way she has every Tuesday since the shop was a laundrette. You stack them in the window while the sky above the bins goes from ink to the colour of weak tea.

The scoring knife is the only tool your father left you that still works. Three slashes for the tins, a cross for the sourdough, and for the rolls you have always cut a little heart on top, because he did, and because customers pretend not to notice and then buy two. This morning there is a new order pinned by the till, in Hana's careful capitals: twelve loaves scored with the peace sign for the allotment dinner on Sunday. She wants them to look like the banners on the church railings.
You try it on a practice loaf and the circle wanders, the lines lean like drunk men, and you swear at the flour. Then you look at the trays of glaze cooling by the sink: beetroot, turmeric, a handful of spinach blended through the sugar. Red, yellow, green, the same order as the bunting strung across Dorset Lane. You brush them on the rolls, lay the heart over the peace sign, and cut once, slowly, in one long movement.
By seven the light is grey and gold on the pavement and the loaves are cooling on the rack. Dolores knocks on the glass, taps the window at the rolls and says they look like a sunrise you could eat. You don't tell her the colours came from vegetables, because some things are better left as they look, and you leave the shutter up.
